Course Overview:

Part 1 (8:00 am - 12:00 pm):
This course is to introduce the basics of solid/liquid separation (or called liquid filtration) from industrial application perspective. Practical information and examples will be used to relate to fundamentals. It is designed for people who are new to the filtration industry either in technical, sales, or business functions.  It is also a very good course for those who have been in this industry for a while to get a better understanding of correlating fundamentals to practical applications. With the wide spectrum of solids/liquid separation technology and to meet audience's interests, this course is designed into two parts, I & II.  Each part can be taken independently but it is recommended to take both.

In part I, simple underlining principles of key solid/liquid separation technologies, liquid filter media types and selection criteria will be presented.  Technologies to improve filtration and separation such as filter aid, coagulation and flocculation are also part of the curriculum.

Course Outline:

  1. Introduction
  2. Particles and Liquid Properties
  3. Principles of Solid/Liquid Separation
  4.  Liquid Filtration Media
  5. Pretreatment
    5.1 - Filter Aids
    5.2 - Coagulation & Flocculation

Part 2 (1:00 pm - 5:00 pm):
In part II, key types of solid/liquid separation equipment will be discussed individually, including all types of filters, gravity settlers and centrifugal separators will be discussed. Basic operation principles, application guidelines and simple testing and evaluation methods are presented.

Course Outline:

  1. Equipment & Testing Methods
    6-1 Straining Equipment
    6-2 Cake Filtration Equipment
    6-3 Depth Filtration Equipment
    6-4 Membrane Filtration Equipment
    6-5 Gravity Settling Equipment
    6-6 Centrifugal Separation Equipment
